In this podcast, consultant rheumatologist Dr Toby Garrood will be joined by pharmacist, Kalveer Flora, and RA specialist nurse, Ruth Slack, to discuss lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic that can be carried forward in redesigning services to better meet the needs of rheumatology patients. Together, they will review the impact of the latest NICE guidance on the care of patients with moderate RA, explore the role of patients and the MDT in rheumatology care and share their experience and advice on how to support patients with RA.

Dr Toby Garrood
Dr Garrood is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Director for Specialist Ambulatory services. He has a particular interest in service transformation and has led numerous projects with a digital focus, including in remote monitoring, patient-centred referral pathways and online access to specialist support for patients. Dr Garrood also has experience in the application of user-centred design in healthcare. During the COVID-19 pandemic he has helped lead his Trust’s response in outpatient services.
Kalveer Flora
Kalveer Flora is Chief Pharmaceutical Officer’s Clinical Fellow and the Lead Rheumatology and Biosimilars Specialist Pharmacist at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Her role encompasses biologic optimisation, patient clinical assessments and service improvement. She works closely with the MDT to improve prescribing, access and oversight of high-cost drugs. She also provides advice on the development of commissioning policies, service specifications and quality standards for specialised rheumatology conditions.
Ruth Slack
Ruth has worked in Rheumatology nursing for over 25 years. In 1990 she became one of the UK’s Rheumatology Nurse Specialists. In her current role, as Senior Rheumatology Nurse, at West Suffolk Hospital, she leads the rheumatology nursing team, re-designs the nurse service and runs nurse-led clinics. She completed her independent prescribing course in 2006. Ruth has chaired several nurse educational meetings and has spoken at national and international rheumatology meetings. Ruth is a past chair of the RCN Rheumatology Forum (2013-2015).
