Collaborative care: encouraging patient


As part of the Inflammation Xchange programme, Co-Chairs Professor Ernest Choy and Dr Elena Nikiphorou were joined by some of the UK’s leading experts in rheumatology to offer their key advice on best practice management for patients with RA, with a special focus on how to offer personalised patient care to individuals facing the daily struggles and challenges of this debilitating disease.

In this panel discussion, Dr Kulveer Mankia and Dr Elena Nikiphorou come together to discuss patient self-management in RA, offering key insights on how to work within a multidisciplinary team to provide support for each patient.

Dr Kulveer Mankia
Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine

Dr Kulveer Mankia qualified in medicine at the University of Oxford and undertook general medical training at the John Radcliffe Hospital as a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) academic clinical fellow. He trained in rheumatology at Oxford and Leeds, was awarded the Doris Overend Throup Memorial Scholarship from the University of Leeds and received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Oxford. His area of interest is early and preclinical RA, including translational science, imaging and clinical trials. Dr Mankia is currently associate professor in rheumatology at the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine; he oversees the pre-RA research clinic, as well as several clinical trials and observational research studies. He has been awarded grant funding as chief investigator from the NIHR, Versus Arthritis and several industry partners.

Dr Elena Nikiphorou
Centre for Rheumatic Diseases, London

Dr Elena Nikiphorou is a consultant rheumatologist and honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London with a clinical and academic interest in RA and spondyloarthritis. Dr Nikiphorou holds an MD degree from University College London, has previously held the presidentship of the Rheumatology & Rehabilitation Section at The Royal Society of Medicine and was the Chair of the largest network of young rheumatologists and researchers in Europe (The Emerging EULAR Network).
